Haliotis sp. Italy, Apulia, Lecce. 43.2 x 29.7
mm. Photo & © Livio
Ruggiero. See also Ruggiero (1981).
The specimen had been identified as Haliotis
coccinea, a species particularly known from the Atlantic. It has
certain non-Mediterranean features, but the coloration does not fit coccinea
at all. It reminds of some H. diversicolor
specimens (Southern Japan and N Indo-Malayan Archipelago), but some obvious
distributional questions arise. Accordingly, the identity of this specimen
is currently unresolved.
